Upgrading to Netscape 6.2
Whether you're migrating to Netscape 6.2 from Netscape Communicator 4.x or upgrading from a previous version of Netscape 6, the process is straightforward. You'll have no trouble maintaining all your current bookmarks, profile information, and mail account data. You'll also have easy access to your bookmarks (Favorites) if you migrate from Internet Explorer. This document covers all necessary procedures for a complete migration or upgrade.

For full coverage, see the Release Notes, which also provide coverage of technical details and information on known problems. Both the Read Me, which provides installation instructions and system requirements, and the Release Notes are supplied with the software. For any questions not answered here or in the Read Me or Release Notes, check the FAQs or the Netscape 6.2 product information page.

Installing the software
To download and install Netscape 6.2, go to the Netscape 6.2 product information page and click the "Download Netscape 6.2 Now" button. The installer will be downloaded to your computer. To run it, find the installer file and double click it. Follow the instructions in the installer.

If you're upgrading from a previous version of Netscape 6 to Netscape 6.2, you're done. All profile information, passwords, preferences, plug-ins, bookmarks, and addressing information is maintained, while the previous version of Netscape 6 software is completely overwritten.

If you're upgrading from Netscape Communicator 4.x or from Internet Explorer, the rest of this document covers what you need to do to import the information you need.

Activating Netscape 6.2
During install, Netscape 6.2 prompts you to activate the software. If you've already registered with Netscape.com or if you have an AOL account, enter your existing Netscape.com or AOL Screen Name and activation is complete. If you have previously activated with a Netscape 6 product, you should not see the activation screens.

If you haven't activated, you can do so during the installation process. Activation provides a number of valuable benefits:

• Your software is configured with free Netscape WebMail and Instant Messenger accounts.

• Your AOL Instant Messenger buddy list is automatically imported.

• You can create a personalized My Netscape page.

You activate by supplying information on the activation screens that appear after the installation. If you choose not to activate, click Cancel. You can register later for a Netscape.com Screen Name and related services by clicking a registration link on the Netscape.com page. You'll also be asked to register if you want to sign up for Netscape WebMail or Instant Messenger.

Copying mail information, bookmarks, and preferences
If you're upgrading from Netscape Communicator 4.5 or later, all bookmarks, mail information--including mail folders, addressing information, and connection settings--and all mail and browser preferences, are automatically copied to Netscape 6.2. If you're upgrading from Internet Explorer, you can view your Favorites from Netscape 6.2.

All of this data is copied from your existing Netscape Communicator browser, or from Internet Explorer. It is also maintained in its original source. Netscape 6.2 is installed in a different directory than either 4.5 or 4.7 or than Internet Explorer. You can leave these applications on your system or you can uninstall them at your convenience.

If you're upgrading from an earlier version of Netscape Communicator, the data is copied to Netscape 6.2 and retained in the original program.

Netscape Communicator Users Who Tried Netscape 6
If you converted to Netscape 6 and then went back to using Communicator, you may find that your profiles are out of date when you upgrade to Netscape 6.2. New bookmarks and new emails in POP accounts that you might expect to find are not accessible.

The explanation for this is actually quite simple. Your profile data was moved to Netscape 6 when you converted from Communicator. If you went back to using Communicator, data accumulated in your Communicator profile only, rather than simultaneously in both your Communicator and Netscape 6 profiles. The procedures given in this document show you how to move information from Communicator to Netscape 6.2 The steps differ depending on whether you've already installed Netscape 6.2 or not.

Note: If you migrated multiple profiles when you installed Netscape 6, follow these directions for each profile you want to use.

Importing addressing data, mail, and settings
Address book information, mail, and mail settings are automatically migrated or copied from earlier Netscape versions. You can also import this data from Outlook Express, Outlook, or Eudora. To do so:

1. Open Mail by clicking the mail icon at the bottom of the screen or by choosing Mail from the Tasks menu.

2. Chose Import from the File menu.

3. In the Import Wizard that opens, click Address Book, Mail, or Settings.

4. In the next screen, select the mail program from which you want to import data.

5. Click Next and then click Finish.

The data is imported. You can repeat this process until you've imported everything you need.

Note:
When importing POP mail, your previous version won't continue to be updated after the import.

Merging address books
When you install Netscape 6.2, your Netscape Communicator 4.5/4.7 and Netscape 6.2 Personal Address Books are automatically merged. If you import addresses from Eudora or Outlook, however, they are maintained as separate books outside of your main Personal Address Book. This is not a problem if you're using only Netscape Mail. It becomes a problem if you want to synchronize your address books with your Netscape WebMail address book. Only the entries in the Personal Address book are synchronized. To merge address books:

1. Choose Address Book from the Tasks menu in either the browser or in Netscape Mail.

2. Click the address book you want to merge into your Personal Address book.

3. Select all the addresses in the right-hand pane.

4. Drag the addresses to the Personal Address book in the left-hand pane.

Maintaining multiple mail accounts
You can maintain Netscape WebMail, AOL Mail, Instant Messenger, or any IMAP or POP account from Netscape Mail. You can also synchronize address books for Netscape WebMail, Netscape Mail and AOL Mail. See the online help for details.

Copying profiles
If you're upgrading from Netscape Communicator 4.5 or later and have a single profile, that profile is automatically copied and converted for use with Netscape 6.2. Profiles from earlier Netscape versions can't be copied and must be recreated.

If you have several profiles, all of them are accessible through the Profile Manager after the upgrade, but they aren't automatically converted for use with Netscape 6.2. If you want to convert additional profiles, use the following procedures to open the Profile Manager.

For Windows:
1. Exit Netscape 6.2 if the program is running
2. Click Start.
3. Select Programs/Netscape 6/Profile Manager.

For MacOS:
1. Exit Netscape 6.2 if the program is running.
2. Double-click the Netscape 6.2 Folder.
3. Double-click the Profile Manager.

For Linux:
1. Exit Netscape 6.2 if the program is running.
2. Type the following at the command line: .

/netscape -profilemanager

When the Profile Manager opens, click the profile you want to convert. A dialog box appears that initiates the conversion. You can then launch Netscape 6.2 using the new profile. Once you have more than one profile, the Profile Manager opens each time you start thebrowser, and you're asked to choose the profile you want to use. Both converted profiles and profiles created in Netscape 6.2 are listed. The basic procedure is identical to that for Netscape Communicator 4.5 or later.

Copying plug-ins
Plug-ins are software that extend the browser's capabilities in specific ways. They may, for example, let you access radio programs over the network or view videos in the browser. When you upgrade from Netscape Communicator 4.5 or later, plug-ins may or may not be copied depending on the platform:

On Windows, the following plug-ins are automatically copied:

• Adobe Acrobat
• Quicktime
You will have the choice of installing the following extensions when you install Netscape 6.2:

• Macromedia Flash Player
• RealPlayer

On MacOS systems, no plug-ins are copied.

On Linux or Unix systems, plug-ins may or may not be copied, depending on the operating system version.

You can reinstall any Plug-ins you want at any time. Plug-ins can be downloaded from the Netscape Plug-Ins Download site, accessible from Netscape.com.
Using Netscape 6.2
To get the most from the many new features built into Netscape 6.2, it's a good idea to spend some time with the Release Notes or Reviewer Guide available from the Netscape 6.2 product information page and also explore the mail and browser menus. The features are easy to use, and you can find full information on all of them in the Help Menu.
