To subscribe to a Newsgroup:

Highlight the Newsgroups server icon in your folders pane on the left. From the 'File' menu, choose 'Subscribe'. If necessary, click the 'Server' pop-up menu to choose another server. In Netscape 4 you can also add more newsgroup servers here, if you know their server addresses, by clicking on the 'Add Server' button.

Netscape will download the names of all the Newsgroups that are available. This will take some time; there are thousands of different Newsgroups to choose from. Click 'Stop' to cancel if it is taking too long. You will only need to do this once.

Occasionally Newsgroups are added or deleted from the Newsgroup server. In Netscape 4 Click on the 'Refresh List' button to update an existing list, in Netcape 6 this button is marked simply 'Refresh'.

In Netscape 4 there is a 'Search' tab to find a Newsgroup that covers an area of interest to you. In the 'Search for:' entry box type in a keyword, for example 'jazz'. Click on the 'Search' button. Any Newsgroups containing the keyword will be listed in the window below the search entry box. Netscape 6 users can navigate though the list of newsgroups shown on the page.

Highlight one of the newsgroups listed and click on 'Subscribe'. This will place a tick next to that particular Newsgroup. To add another, select a different newsgroup and click 'Subscribe' again. When you have finished adding newsgroups, click 'OK'.

If you are using a Mac, click on the dot or checkbox in the 'Subscribe' column to place a tick mark next to a particular Newsgroup. When you have chosen one or more of them, click the 'Subscribe' button. Click 'OK'. Your subscription list appears in the folders pane of your Messenger Inbox under your Newsgroup server icon.
