Cyber Patrol is an Internet access management utility which parents and teachers use to control children's access to the Internet. It allows those responsible for children to restrict access to certain times of the day, limit the total time spent on-line in a day, and block access to Internet sites they deem inappropriate. Cyber Patrol also can be used to control access to the major on-line services and to local applications such as games and personal financial managers.
Cyber Patrol loads during start-up and runs in the background, controlling access to all associated applications. Cyber Patrol is accessed via password and offers two levels of parental password control. Several safeguards include controls which prevent children from disablingCyber Patrol or simply renaming blocked applications.
How does it work?
Cyber Patrol comes loaded with a listing of researched Internet sites containing materials which parents may find questionable as well a listing of researched Internet sites containing fun and educational material for children. Parents can go where they like.
A team of Internet professionals, including parents and teachers, reviews the sites on the Cyber Patrol lists using a set of criteria that categorises Internet sites and resources according to the level of possibly objectionable content.
The lists are divided into categories and access can be managed down to the file directory or page level. This means that appropriate material at an Internet address need not be blocked simply because there is some restricted material elsewhere at the address. The categories include: Partial Nudity; Nudity; Sexual Acts/Text; Gross Depictions; Intolerance; Satanic or Cult; Drugs and Drug Culture; Militant/Extremist; Violence/Profanity; Questionable/Illegal; Gambling; Sex Education and Alcohol & Tobacco.
Parents can select the categories of content they wish to block. They can also allow access to any site on the list, which they deem appropriate.
Parents also can deny access to additional sites not included on the CyberNOT List, and can control/block access to major on-line services as well as applications such as games.
The lists are updated weekly for downloading.
Time Control
Cyber Patrol allows parents to manage computer use in their own households. Cumulative duration of the use of the Internet and other applications is captured, allowing reporting. In addition to providing a useful overview of computer usage, these reports also can be used to verify on-line provider and telephone bills. Cyber Patrol's multi-user capability allows on-line access to be customized for each member of the family. Parents can set on-line access according to individual interests, needs and ages.
Cyber Patrol provides control of children's access through Internet applications and web browsers, including Netscape, Internet Explorer andMosaic 2.0. Cyber Patrol also blocks sites accessed via a proxyserver.
ChatGard
ChatGard enables parents to keep kids from keying in selected words, phrases or numbers while logged onto an on-line service or directly onto the Internet.
Parents have the ability to stop their children from sending out their names, addresses and phone numbers online. Parents enter words or character strings on a ChatGard list. Then, when the child types these words or character strings, the listed words, the equivalent number of nonsense characters replaces characters or phrases. The nonsense characters, rather than the words or characters, go out online.
The ChatGard list also includes seven profanities so that children cannot send these words out online in search of sexually explicit sites or in conversations. Parents can add additional words if they so wish.
Will I be able to use it?
Cyber Patrol 4.0 features a new tutorial for first time users, making the software even easier to use. With a few clicks of a mouse, any parent or teacher can tailor the Internet filter to suit an individual child's age and maturity.
