How to upload your Webpage

The page you wish people visiting your site to see first, must be named index.htm or index.html which must be typed in lower-case letters only. This is the placeholder file for your homepage. When people navigate to your homepage they will be automatically directed to this page first. If you forget to do this, visitors to your page will see the message telling them that access to your site is forbidden.

Note. You can change or add to your web page at any time.

Publishing your web page using FTP

Double-click the Netscape Online icon on your Desktop to open the Launcher and click on the FTP button. This will connect using your Netscape Online Dial-up Networking connection.

Once you are connected the FTP window will be displayed.

Connecting to the Remote Computer

Open the Connection menu and click New

The Connection Properties dialogue box will appear.

Configure the Connection Properties by entering the following details:

In the Name field, type the name by which you wish the connection to be known. This can be anything you like, e.g. NSO.

In the IP Address field type members.netscapeonline.co.uk

The folder field should contain: ~ (the tilde character, which can be found next to the Enter key on your keyboard)

The Port field should contain 21

In the Username field, enter your Netscape Online e-mail address (e.g. emailname@netscapeonline.co.uk)

In the Password field enter your Netscape Online e-mail password (e.g. myemailpassword).

If you want to save your password, click on the Save Password check box.

If you want more security, leave the Save Password box blank and you will then be asked for the password each time you connect.

For the highest security, leave both the Save Password box and the Username field empty. Each time you connect to the remote computer you will be asked for both a Username and password.

When you have entered all the details, click the OK button.

Next select Open on the Connection menu. In the Open Connection window, highlight the name of the connection you just created e.g. NSOL and click the OK button.

Connecting will probably take around 30 seconds.

When the connection has been made, you are ready to locate your saved pages and upload.

The left hand side of the FTP window display the Local file view (contents of the local drive, your PC).You can use these windows to locate your saved pages.

The right hand side of the FTP window displays the Target folder (the contents of your homepage on the remote computer.)

Uploading your web page is a simple process. Select the files you have created from the Local file view on the left hand side of the FTP window. Hold down the mouse button and move the cursor to the target folder in the Remote folder window. Release the mouse button while the cursor is in the target folder view. You will now be prompted to confirm the file copy. Once the files are sucessfully copied to the server they will appear listed in the bottom right window.

Note: You must also publish everything which your page will require, such as images or sound files.

Once this process has been completed select Close from the Connection menu. This will disconnect you from the remote computer.

Once published you can view your web page instantly by going online and browsing to your web address which will be

http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/emailname/

(where 'emailname' is your Netscape Online e-mail address, excluding the '@netscapeonline' domain suffix - e.g. emailname@netscapeonline.co.uk would find their home page at http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/emailname).
