2 DEAD, 50 HURT IN KASHMIR ATTACKS

A string of attacks, some at political targets, in Indian-controlled Kashmir have killed two civilians and left more than 70 others injured, including several police.

Militants threw a grenade during a candidate's political address in Bagwa, killing two civilians and wounding 50 others -- three critically, police sources told CNN. The candidate from the opposition National Conference party walked away unscathed.

Bagwa is about 125 miles (200 km) south of Kashmir's summer capital, Srinagar.

Elections in Kashmir are scheduled for May 5.

In a separate incident near the village of Bungam, nine people, including two policemen, were injured when unidentified militants hurled a grenade at a local representative's motorcade, police sources told CNN.

Bungam is about 30 miles (50 km) south of Srinagar.

State legislator Mohamad Khalil Naik was on his way to address a public gathering for the upcoming vote.

The grenade missed the motorcade and injured people the street.

In a separate incident in Handwara, about 37 miles (60 km) north of Srinagar, militants attacked a police station with a hand grenade. Fourteen people including seven policemen were injured in that attack.
