GAZA BLAST KILLS APPARENT CAR BOMBER

A vehicle laden with explosives detonated Wednesday morning, killing the Palestinian driver and wounding four Israeli soldiers, according to Israeli military sources.

Sources from the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, identified the driver as a 23-year-old suicide car bomber from Gaza's Nusseirat refugee camp.

The jeep, traveling from the Deir el Balah refugee camp, went through a fence as it traveled in the direction of the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom about 7 a.m. (midnight ET), the sources said.

Israeli soldiers called for the driver to stop and when the calls went ignored, soldiers in a jeep gave chase and fired toward the vehicle, before it exploded, the sources said.

The intended target of the car bomb is not clear.

One of the soldiers was in moderate condition, the others received minor injuries.

Also Wednesday, Israeli border police arrested Sari Nusseibeh, the president of Al Quds University and the top Palestinian official in East Jerusalem, as he arrived at the university campus in Beit Hanina, Nusseibeh's spokesman said.

According to Dimitri Diliani, the police did not give a reason for Nusseibeh's arrest and did not say where he was being taken. Nusseibeh has been detained before by Israeli officials for alleged Palestinian Authority activities in East Jerusalem.

A police spokesman said Nusseibeh was detained for employing illegal workers at the university.

Nusseibeh is the author of a proposed land-for-peace deal.
