The URLpool - 5th Sept 2001

Eugene Mirman, Neil Young impersonator.
Welcome to the URLpool, where the best sites on the web are herded up, numbered, badged, branded, and compressed into a single webpage for your surfing pleasure. This week, we’ve got singing dictionaries, ugly footballers, and stupid world leaders, well, one stupid world leader in particular, for you to exercise your clicking finger on – let the linking begin!

Web Karaoke – it’s the new bingo!
In one of those desperate attempts to start a new craze, so beloved by lazy journalists everywhere, we present to you the wonders of the web karaoke phenomenon! Oh, alright then, we’re just making tenuous links between two very funny sites that appeared in our inbox this week – EugeneMirman.com and Dictionaraoke.com.

Eugene Mirman appears to be a helium-sucking 30-year-old child, who has recorded versions of classic songs (“Son Of A Preacher Man”, “Hey Jude”, and so on), in his own inimitable style. It all seems a bit funny/disturbing, until you get to the cover version of Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold”, at which point it becomes clear that the child’s been impersonating Mr. Young all the time. Inspired stuff.

Dictionaraoke.com seems almost normal in comparison – more popular favourites put through the karaoke wringer, but this time the vocals are provided by those scary online dictionary voices. Incredibly, this unusual singing technique can turn even the most appalling crimes against music (Celine Dion) into socially acceptable ditties. Don’t miss the excellent interpretation of The Orb’s “Little Fluffy Clouds”…

There's someone uglier than Luke Chadwick?
Well, according to UglyFootballers.com, Manchester United’s one-man acne army, Luke “MoonFace Alpha” Chadwick, is only the second ugliest footballer in the top division. You’ll have to visit the site to discover the identity of the Premiership’s least attractive man, but suffice to say that it’s not a pretty sight. If the Ugly Premiership XI doesn’t satisfy your cravings for grotesque goalies, there’s also a Nationwide XI, a European XI, sections on ugly streakers and ugly mullets, and a truly grim look at ugly injuries to put you off your supper. Grisly but compelling.

Dubya's dumb not looks as he as
Finally, we have the frankly terrifying BushGrammar.com, a site chronicling the American President’s adventures in the English language. Like that other political master of the spoken word, Daniel Quayle, Bush’s inability to form a coherent sentence (or thought) has provided ample ammunition for those who doubting his abilities, and bushgrammar.com does an excellent job of highlighting his many verbal slips. Now all we have to do is decide whether to laugh at him, or dig a big hole in our back garden and fill it with concrete and Spam. See you in three years…
